Introduction to Autonomous Functioning

The Index of Autonomous Functioning (IAF) is a scientifically validated measure of dispositional autonomy—the extent to which your actions are self-determined and aligned with your authentic values and interests.

Research shows that higher levels of autonomous functioning are associated with greater well-being, more satisfying relationships, and better psychological adjustment, especially during major life transitions like the one you're experiencing.

This assessment measures three key aspects of autonomy:

  1. Authorship/Self-congruence - The extent to which you experience yourself as the author of your behavior and feel your actions align with your values and authentic self
  2. Interest-taking - Your tendency to be aware of and interested in understanding your internal experiences, emotions, and reactions
  3. Low Susceptibility to Control - The degree to which you resist pressure from external forces and internally imposed imperatives (like "shoulds" and "musts")

Understanding your autonomous functioning can help you identify areas where you might benefit from developing greater self-determination and authenticity as you rebuild your life.
